Homeowners often notice the effects of condensation before they identify the cause. A sour, smoky, or musty odor near the fireplace is common, especially during humid weather. Dark stains in the firebox, rust on a damper or fireplace doors, flaking clay tile, and white powdery residue on exterior brick are also warning signs.
